As a kid, I was always a fan of Labrador Retrievers. It wasn’t until my adult years that I discovered there are actually two different styles within the breed — American and English. After tons of research, we found that the English Labrador was the perfect fit for our family.

Since many people don’t realize there are two different styles of Labradors, we put together this page to help educate families so they can make the best choice for their own home and lifestyle.

Keep in mind, the American Kennel Club (AKC) recognizes only one Labrador Retriever breed standard — there is no official separation between “English” and “American.” Over time, though, people have started using these terms to describe two different styles of Labradors that come from different breeding focuses.

 

English Labradors (Conformation/Show Style)

• Build: Stockier and more solid, with a broad head, thick neck, and a shorter, blocky frame.

• Temperament: Calm, laid-back, and eager to please. They’re known for being wonderful family companions thanks to their gentle nature.

• Coat & Tail: Dense double coat with a signature “otter tail.”

• Purpose: Traditionally bred for the show ring and companionship, though they still carry the natural retrieving instincts Labradors are known for.

• Best Fit For: Families, therapy or service work, and those looking for a relaxed, affectionate companion.

 

American Labradors (Field/Working Style)

• Build: Taller, leaner, and more athletic, with a longer muzzle and narrower frame.

• Temperament: High energy, driven, and very focused when it comes to retrieving or working.

• Coat & Tail: Slightly lighter frame with a thinner tail and coat compared to English Labs.

• Purpose: Bred primarily for hunting, field trials, and competitive work.

• Best Fit For: Active individuals, hunters, or families looking for a high-drive, working companion.

Which is right for you?

Both types share the same Labrador Retriever heart: loyal, intelligent, and loving. The main difference comes down to energy level, build, and lifestyle fit.
