Preparing for Your Puppy

At Alpha English Labs, our commitment to every puppy continues long after they leave our home. Preparing in advance will help make your puppy’s transition into their new family as smooth and stress-free as possible. The list below outlines the basic items we recommend having ready before bringing your puppy home. Being prepared allows you to focus on bonding with your new companion during those exciting first days.

As always, if you have any questions while preparing, we are happy to help.

Essentials:

Crate
42-inch crate (42"L × 28"W × 30"H) is the most commonly recommended size for an adult English Labrador. Many families choose a crate with a divider so the space can grow with the puppy.

Food & Water Bowls

Puppy Food
Our puppies are currently eating Purina One Plus Large Breed Puppy Formula. We recommend continuing with this food during the initial transition to your home to help prevent stomach upset. If you decide to switch foods later, please research the proper method for gradually transitioning to a new diet.

Collar

Our puppy collars currently adjust up to 12.6 inches, so selecting a collar that starts near that size will provide the best fit.

Leash

ID Tag

Washable Puppy Bed

Playpen or Baby Gates
Helpful for creating safe spaces while your puppy learns the household routine.

Chew Toys
Examples include rubber toys, KONG toys, and Nylabones to support healthy chewing during teething.

Comfort Toys
Soft or plush toys (some with squeakers) can help provide comfort and entertainment.

Health & Grooming

Brush or Comb

Nail Clippers or Nail Grinder

Puppy Shampoo
Use a shampoo specifically formulated for puppies or dogs.

Waste Bags & Holder

Enzymatic Stain & Odor Remover
Essential for cleaning accidents during early training.

Veterinary Appointment
We take each puppy for their first wellness exam at approximately 6–8 weeks of age. Please schedule your puppy’s next vet visit around three weeks after that exam.

For your puppy’s recommended appointment timing, feel free to contact us directly.

Training & Socialization

Training Treats
Choose small, soft treats that are easy for puppies to chew quickly during training.

Puppy Training Pads
Optional, but some families find them helpful during the early transition period.

Training Resources
This may include a training book, puppy class, or structured training program.

Backyard & Clean-Up

Pooper Scooper

Outdoor Waste Bags or Disposal Bin

Hose or Outdoor Cleaner
Helpful for rinsing patios, yards, or outdoor puppy areas.
